Hello again. Wow! Time flies by pretty quickly these days. I am going to continue my story of what happened after I started therapy in individual therapy.
After about the 4th session my therapist encouraged me to join one of his therapy groups. I was curious and a little worried and anxious about what the experience would be like. I remember the first session very clearly. I was very welcomed and accepted by the members of the group by being given the space to talk about what brought me to therapy and what my hopes were. Each member responded warmly to my presence. There were 7 people and the therapist. People checked in about what their week had been like and what they were feeling. The group was structured to enable each person to say what was on their mind and share feelings. After 'check in' people took individual time with the therapist to 'work' on something. What I remember mostly was that people expressed deep longings and feelings for experiences in their life which were unresolved. The therapist encouraged expression and facilitated a resolve. For my first session I mostly observed and didn't say much but I felt very safe and was glad to be there with everyone. It is a wonderful feeling to be in a room with others who totally accept you and offer support. I was beginning to experience 'relational security'. If you look at my site I explain more about relational needs that we all have from birth. I stayed in the group for at least 2 years and I will tell you ,more about what I gained from the experience in another post........it won't be so long this time.
I currently run an ongoing therapy group every Tuesday 6-8 and there are a couple of spaces. If any one is curious and wants to know more contact me. Most people need a number of individual sessions first but it depends on where you are at and what your needs are. I love doing group work and I find there is much more room for creativity, support, expression, and groups meet the needs of many people. At the time mine were that I felt alone, unloved, and had issues with belonging anywhere.
